I can't be the only one who would rather see a SOTU broadcasted from the Oval Office without the side show of the House and Senate . The administration's crony ideologues constantly standing and sitting and clapping and hooting along with the sour faces if their counterparts not so secret resentments.
The State of the union should be directed at the citizens, you know, the people who actually run the government. It shouldn't have the feel of POTUS just appeasing to his fellow lemmings. When he speaks about the successes of the past year and the projections of the year to come. He should be speaking to us. I would rather look at the eyes of the president and see that he actually believes the words that are coming out his own mouth rather than seeing him avoid a personal connection, constantly looking around the room revelling in the thunderous applause of those surrounding him of like mind. I don't care about their approvals. Of course they are going to like his ideas!
It pains me to watch these SOTU addresses lately. Not only am I in constant disbelief of anything that comes out the president's mouth, judging only by the experiences as a middle class worker during his last 6 years in office and having a mind of my own but also because I can never get the feeling that he actually cares about ALL AMERICANS, not just some. I never get the feeling that he cares about the things THE PEOPLE want more than what he or his ideologues want.
This isn't about party either. I've noticed over the past couple decades the growing increase of public spectacle that happen when a president of either party tries to push a proposal or agenda that either he really doesn't believe in, therefore avoiding a direct contact with the people who will probably see through his bullshit or a proposal that he knows he won't be able to fool the people into believing in without them seeing the approvals of those in the cabinet. (Queue, slow clap! " Hey, why are clapping? I don't know, everybody else is clapping").
No, This isn't about party. This is about the people we elected to be the voices for US! The people who are supposed to be passing laws in OUR best interest. ALL OF US, NOT JUST SOME OF US. NOT JUST THE ONE WHO CAN BETTER PUSH THEIR AGENDA! NOT JUST THE ONES WHO FALL WITHIN THEIR PARTY LINES. NOT JUST A MINORITY OF PEOPLE WHO HAPPEN TO CATCH A HEADLINE AND WOULD MAKE FOR A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THE PRESIDENT TO GIVE THE ILLUSION THAT HE REALLY CARES.
