Why do I do this to myself!?

"Old wood best to burn, old wine to drink, old friends to trust, and old authors to read."

Athenaeus

We wake in the morning or early afternoon , roll over and open one bloodshot eye. We retreat from the piercing shine of the sunlight and we taste the dry, remnants of last night’s poisons and we all think that one question that we never fully get an answer to

“ Why do I do this to Myself?!”

At my age I have had the misfortune of losing many friends and family. Some have made the transition into the afterlife and some have simply moved along their paths. Despite the obvious longing for our lost ones, we will always hold onto the memories of them. This is a crazy world, one that can take something away at the blink of an eye.

We are never guaranteed another day with our loved ones, so we take each day we are able to be with them and we enjoy them to the fullest. We go to the birthday parties. We go to the dinners. We go to the cookouts. We gather and we enjoy our times together, because at the end of the road, where either the universe reclaims them or their lives take them in a different direction, we won’t remember the times we had with our loved ones, that we didn’t have.

"I try to greet my friends with a drink in my hand, a warm smile on my face, and great music in the background, because that's what gets a dinner party off to a fun start. "

So go! Enjoy! Have that drink! Make those memories! Laugh! Love! Be! So long as you do so responsibly, enjoy your times, and accept the fate that is waiting for you in the morning.

In my experience, no hangover has been without the expense of good times and great memories. Some of those memories are the only thing I have left of certain people. So next time you wake up with a dry mouth, bloodshot eyes and a pounding headache and you ask yourself “ Dear God, Why do I do this to myself?!” Take out your phone, look at the pictures from the night before. Think of the joy and the laughter. Think of the people and the new stories and memories. This should answer your question…...Then take some aspirin and Lay back down.

Cheers to late nights and great memories!

Don't be afraid.... That ringing you hear in your ears is just a bit of ...
